What is customize method?
Currently, for performing the laser on cornea, two major methods are used: the first one is a typical method known as “standard”, method while the other is “customize”. In the conventional method only the vision score of the patient is taken and visual correction is performed based on the vision score. On the other hand, in the customize method which is a novel and advanced method, in addition to the vision score, other optical disorders and distortions of the eyes are measured and calculated using a special device and are corrected alongside the vision score. It should be said that human eye is not an ideal optical system and even when it does not have any diopter score, it has disorders known as aberration. Aberrations have special forms in every individual causing different visual disorders in the person including unclear image, scattering of the light, and failure to have a normal vision during the night. These disorders are independent of the vision score and exist even in individuals whose eyes are not weak in terms of score. In customize method, in every person their special aberrations are measured and corrected by laser. The aim of this method is to correct first the vision score and the extent of vision and also improve the quality of vision and correct the visual disorders of the person. Nevertheless, unlike what was believed earlier, this method is not used for all patients and is effective for those who have considerable aberrations based on preoperative examinations.
Persian ophthalmology clinic was one of the first centers of the country which achieved the technology of customize. One of these technologies is Zyoptix system, which we have used it successfully in many of our patients. Currently, the more advanced version of this system has been installed on our laser device and we are able to treat patients requiring this technology via this method.
What are Zyoptix device and method?
Zioptix is a complete software and hardware system for correcting vision through customize method. The Zyoptix system includes two parts and two stages: diagnostic stage and therapeutic stage. In the diagnostic stage, in addition to conventional examinations known on the patient, other visual disorders of the patient are also measured by a device called aberrometer. The findings of this stage are then transferred to the laser device for correcting the vision. In the second stage of operation, laser device designed for this purpose is used for correcting the vision. In the Zyoptix system, in the diagnostic stage, an aberrometer device called Zywave is utilized. This device measures the quantitative and qualitative extent of aberrations using Wavefront properties of the light, while also measuring the vision score. The aberrations of the person are unique to them and therefore for treatment of each person, a special program specifically for their eyes should be designed by the system. Based on this fact, the design and operation by the Zyoptix system is called customize or personalize. Nevertheless, not all individuals require the customize method, and they will need it only when the extent of aberrations is greater than a specific value. In other cases, the Zyoptix system has another choice known as tissue saving. This system has most of the capabilities of Zyoptix. This means that the same laser with the same features is used, and again the speed, accuracy, and safety of the operation are very high as with Zyoptix. Further, the extent of corneal removal, as suggested by the name of the operation, has also been minimized. The only difference with real Zyoptix is that it is not able to correct aberrations. Nevertheless, the patients that are chosen for this type of operation do not have considerable aberrations. Another advantage of Zyoptix system is the potential for performing a method called aspheric. This method is used in special individuals as a substitute to tissue saving and customize, and offers very good outcomes for these individuals.
